Neuromuscular Dentistry - TMD (Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction)

TMD is a chronic degenerative disorder that often takes years to develop. Currently, several million North Americans suffer from this condition, many of whom are not even aware. TMD refers to the dysfunction of the muscles responsible for jaw movement and also to the jaw joints which connect the mandible to the skull. The disharmony and misalignment of these systems can lead to numerous physiological problems such as the following:

  • Headaches
  • Jaw pain
  • Facial pain
  • Shoulder pain
  • Neck pain
  • Clicking or popping sounds in the jaw
  • Tight jaw muscles
  • Ringing in the ears

If you have some combination of these symptoms and have not found a solution by visiting your general practitioner, you may be suffering from TMD. Neuromuscular dentistry focuses on placing the jaw in its optimal position to alleviate the often painful symptoms associated with Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction mentioned above.

Treatment

Once a TMD diagnosis has been made, Dr. Camellato will discuss various treatment options that best suit your individual circumstance. Some of the most successful TMD treatments include bite adjustments, oral orthotic appliances, and orthodontics. To find the optimal position for your jaw and the surrounding muscles, a computerized jaw tracking instrument is used to record jaw movement, resting position and path of closure. X-rays and sonography may be used to detect abnormalities by recording jaw joint sounds. The next step will usually be to “TENS” the jaw and facial muscles. A TENS machine sends low electric pulses through these muscles causing them to contract and relax. This is done to identify where your muscles are most comfortable and is a key factor is deciphering what type of appliance and treatment will be needed to correct pain and discomfort.

Dr. Camellato has diagnosed and treated TMD in patients with great success for years. To learn more about the painful symptoms of TMD and how this condition can be treated, please contact us to schedule an initial consultation.
